Teleseminar Mannheim-Lancaster

Course Description

It is the purpose of this joint seminar between the University of Mannheim, Germany and Lancaster University, U.K. to bring together researchers and students from both places to do joint work on multimedia topics.

We will have a first meeting at Lancaster University on February 9, 2007, give an introduction to the topic and build the teams. In a subsequent cooperation phase of approximately 6 weeks, the teams will cooperate from their home locations, designing and programming software for cut detection (in Java). Finally, the teams will prepare a short paper, a PowerPoint presentation and a demo, and we will all meet in Mannheim to present and discuss the results.


Course objectives

The goal of this course is to learn different cut detection approaches for videos. To understand algorithms for the detection of hard cuts and soft cuts, we will refer to recent research activities and consider pixel based techniques, histograms, edge based algorithms, and contrast based approaches. During the course, the students from Mannheim and Lancaster will develop software in JAVA and implement automatic cut detection algorithms. Mixed teams with students from both universities will cooperate from their home locations and use collaboration tools which support shared software development.

At the end of the course, students will have gained an in-depth understanding of recent cut detection algorithms. They will have acquired the skills to design, analyse and implement such a system. Additionally, they will have gained skills at working with collaboration tools for joint software development.


Prerequisites

Students should have basic knowledge of multimedia technologies and should have participated in an introductory class on this topic.
