COST Action 264
Enabling Networked Multimedia Group Communication

COST stands for European Cooperation in the Field of Scientific and Technical Research, an initiative of the European Union to improve the cooperation between researchers in Europe working on similar topics. The objective of COST Action 264 is to bring together research teams involved in group communication, both from the network technology and application perspective. They cooperate in order to identify solutions for the improvement of multi-peer communication architectures, including communication mechanisms, applications and infra-structure. The activities of COST 264 include:

  • bringing together European teams involved in the area of group communication to discuss research activities, identify key issues and potential solutions, and benefit from cross-fertilization,
  • creating an experimental multicast infrastructure named the COSTBone, dedicated to this action and to the European networking research community,
  • experimenting with new multi-peer transmission control algorithms and mechanisms de-signed by the action's participants,
  • inviting people from industry to whom these technologies will be important in the near future, to discuss their needs and expectations,
  • evaluating the work carried out in the different standardization bodies and providing feed-back, as researchers and users, to the standardization groups (in particular to IETF),
  • discussing solutions at workshops and meetings (including electronic meetings over the COSTBone),
  • providing a framework for the exchange of research scientists and students in order to improve the level of collaboration between research groups.

COST 264 is open to all research and development laboratories, at universities, in industry and government organizations. Anyone interested in joining is invited to do so.

For more information on the project please consult the COST264 Web Site.

Within COST 264 working group 3, headed by Professor Effelsberg, is responsible for the Euroseminars, a series of talks transmitted over the European MBone. In order to assist participants we provide three documents with technical details.
