This website provides all participants with the necessary information for the Teleseminar Mannheim Lancaster.
It is the purpose of this joint seminar between the University of
Mannheim, Germany and Lancaster University, U.K. to bring together
researchers and students from both places to do joint work on
multimedia topics. Both universities have outstanding multimedia
research groups, and it will be quite beneficial for students on both
sides to learn more about international state-of-the-art research and
cooperation.
In addition, it has become quite normal for computer science students
to work on an international team after they graduate. For example,
consulting companies often form such international teams, with
colleagues with specific competences from all over the world, to work
on customer problems, using their laptops, no matter where they
currently are. We intend to create a similar setting for our students
in order to train them for this new scenario.
The content topic in the Spring of 2008 will be to study algorithms
and techniques to create panoramic images. Students
should have basic knowledge of multimedia technologies and should have
participated
in an introductory class on this topic.
We will have a first meeting at Lancaster University in 2008, give an
introduction to the topic and build the teams. In a
subsequent cooperation phase of approximately 6-8 weeks, the teams
will cooperate from their home locations, designing and programming
software to create panoramic images (in Java). Finally, the teams will
prepare a
short paper, a PowerPoint presentation and a demo. We will present and
discuss the results in a joint Tele-Presentation.
For Mannheim students the participation will either count as a seminar (3 ECTS points), as a ”Praktikum” (6 ECTS points), or as a "Studienarbeit", depending on the amount of work they are planning to spend. For Lancaster students, the participation will count as a project in the multimedia class.
If you are interested in a really exciting international experience we
invite you to apply for this teleseminar:
In Mannheim, please send an email with information about your studies and standing so far to Professor Effelsberg.
In Lancaster, please send the same information to Dr. Mauthe.
The deadline for applications is
December 14, 2007. You will be
informed if you can participate no later than December 21, 2007.
