The Design of an Internet Charging System

Jan Gerke, Burkhard Stiller, Placi Flury, Peter Reichl ETH Zürich

Pricing and charging are important functionalities future commercialized networks need to offer. In particular for tomorrow's Internet, differentiated services and value-added services will develop due to emerging application requirements. Based on varying Quality-of-Service levels Internet Service Providers (ISP) might distinguish themselves based on different service bundling and business models. Therefore, a generic and modular Internet Charging System is required to cope with this wide range of services, networking technologies, and pricing plans.

The proposed charging system has been developed within the M3I project and fulfills a set of functionalities for managing Internet charging issues. This talk discusses the main background, design dimensions, the system's architecture, and details on its modular building blocks. An example application of this charging system to a pricing system concludes the presentation.
