The add node button allows to add new nodes on the animation canvas. Just press the add node button before you move the mouse to the position in the animation panel were you want to place the new node and then press the mouse button again. You can move the node anytime by placing the mouse pointer over the node and pressing the mouse button once. Now the node will follow your mouse until you press the button again. All links connected to the node will follow your movements.
